History of Editing

Male and Female Editors

According to "IMDb 22 June 2011" in the top 10 film editors in the world there is only two female who makes the top 10 list, In first and in second place. My research has shown that in Hollywood that 85% of films are directed by men, 80% of films are written by men and 94% are then shot by men also. Although present today females are very involved in films, with editing being one of their specialties.

Editing techniques

Montage-Clips placed together with no order.

Used in 'thriller films' to start creating tension and suspense.

Used in 'horror film' e.g a murderer killing many people at different places to show what he has done.

Continuous-In sequence

Used in most genres of film in order to set a scene and introduce environment.

Linear/Non-Linear-Order/Not Order.

Used in 'thriller films' like memento to show different parts and to make the audience think and give them an insight of what the actor is feeling at the time.

Flash Cutting-A shot that lasts for a brief amount of time (2 seconds)

Used in 'thriller films' to show short moments which create tension/suspense.

Used in 'horror films' to show the monster/antagonist to scare the audience or characters for a second or two without giving away too much what the antagonist looks like.

Match Cut-Help create strong continuity of action and linking two clips.

Used in 'thriller films' to create tension of a villain on where he/she is and where he/she was.

Continuity-This type of editing does not look noticeable to the audience and the cuts have been put together to have a smooth flow. This type of editing can match a linear and a non-linear film.

Jump Cut

This is where during a scene the editor makes small cuts that indicate a jump forward in time. An example of this type of technique is used in the film "Royal Tenenbaum", a character is cutting different facial hair from himself however during this scene the character changes in appearance for a couple of seconds.

Title sequence editing

This is a picture of the editing software and the layout of it.This is a close-up shot of hands to show effect and not give much away from the character. This then creates tension and suspense of who the character is.

This is another angle of a mirroring shot of when someone is doing something its reflection does the same this is a good looking shot and creates a mysterious effect of who the actor/character is in the scene. Shots like these are used alot in drama/action films when trying to follow the protagonist. It creates suspension very well and helps show the character yet still doesn't give anything away about the characters or show there whole face or body.

Editing Task

Quick Cut

I made this to practise editing on Adobe Premiere Pro, this then gives me a better understanding of what I can do on the software. I made a montage of shots and tried to match it with the music in the shots. This makes it synchronised and it then makes the clip look more advanced and looks better. I used music so I could practice making the images in sync with the music.

Types of editing in film comparison

Hot Fuzz-

Repetition is used in this scene to show effect of the same things repeating in his life and he has no change. The symbols that repeat is the phone the lights the taxi sign and the plant.Insect noises are in the scene also showing that he is lonely and bored and he has noone to talk to or keep him company. The fast cuts to black shows time passing very quickly and towards the end of the travelling the cuts get slower and instead of cutting straight to black it fades to slow it down and show the destination is closer.

Scott Pilgrim vs The World-

The editing in this scene are very quick to create tension and they don't really show the women on the phone until the end when it gets important when Scott mentions a girlfriend and the girl seems upset/angry. This can be seen by the emotions in her face and the way she cuts of the conversation very quickly. The music also builds up at the start and then cuts very quickly when the roommate announces he needs to move out.

Comparison

'Hot Fuzz' uses more repetition, quick cuts and more lighting changes, it also uses more ambient sounds in the film. In 'Scott Pilgrim vs The World' the lighting stays the same and the emotion is the same throughout except from the part when the phone rings. The women on the phone is shown to be scary and mysterious only showing the lips and lower part of her face, when the man says he has a girlfriend the girls face is shown and it seems to be scared/upset. The two editing clips are different as one is a conversation and one is a silent travelling scene. This means that the editing techniques in the scenes will be different also.To create the correct effect on the audience.

Understanding of the purposes of editing within film and tv

Editing includes all sorts of techniques to make the film as best as possible. The editing makes the film flow all in order. The editing needs to keep the audience interested.

Intercuts 1

For the first draft, At the start, I made each shot longer to establish the scene more and give the audience a bit longer to understand where the scene is set, throughout the phone call on the shots, I sped up the cutting using quick cuts to speed up the tempo and to show the audience it was an action scene. In this short film one of the characters are on the mobile and he says he is at a place which is near a 'Calor' sign. When he says this the shot cuts and shows the 'Calor' sign.

Purpose of using Intercuts

Using intercuts, not only changes the attention of the audience it also keeps the audience aware and interested. The change of angles shots and locati0ns establishes more of the location scene/shots are filmed in. This means using intercuts then leaves the audience more aware and immersed. Leaving their end opinion on the film better.

Quick Cuts

Using quick cuts in media you can make a good scene easily, especially making a thriller or drama film. Using quick cuts makes easy tension and builds suspense.

Purpose of using Quick Cuts

Making a fight scene or suspenseful chase scene, quick cuts is the key for it to be successful. Using quick cuts keeps the suspense and keeps the audience interested.

Editing with Filters

Editing with filters, is another effect which portrays a different reason or even a different narrative, like in the clip above, the black and white shots are used to portray the boys dreams, this is used to make it clear for the audience that it not real life and the change of colour portrays that.

Editing with transitions

Flip-Over - This transition is very basic and shown above. This is a good transition to show a difference of location. Also can used to swap characters perception or a different scene. Transitions like this are not very popular in the industry as they make the film look cheap or tacky. This transition can be used to show either a characters other side or a new beginning. For example, in a scene there is a happy person who then drops his phone and cracks it, then the transition takes place and now the person is angry, so it helps to show a change in character.

Bars - This transition again is barely used in the film industry. Again because of the same reasons as the 'Flip-Over' as it looks cheap and tacky. These types of transitions also make the film look very unprofessional, but if used in the correct way they can be made to fit the scene correctly.

Split - This is more popular in the industry. Shows a new opening, new scene and helps create a new beginning and shows that well for the audience to understand. This transition is used alot in tv and film dramas as it helps to show a new scene quickly.
