History of Visual Effects

Alfred Clark 1895 - Made the first-ever motion picture special effect. Filming an reenactment of Mary's beheading, Clark instructed an actor to arrive to the location in Mary's costume.

Impact on the industry

The first special effect had a massive impact on the industry. Many other film makers decided to try and jump on the trend and start making their own films using visual effects, and the start it was very popular with the audience and still is till this day now.

Visual Effects in title sequenes

'Catch me if you can' I like this title sequence because it has a different style and is very artsy which is why I like it. The transitions between each little scene and the way the characters look and move.

I like the way this sequence is made, It uses events in the series and uses short moments which isn't giving anything away to the audience but at the same time it uses these shots to intrigue the viewers and make them interested.

Visual Effects

Visual Effects in Music Videos

Why do the music industry go for CGI and visual effects so often during the creation of music videos?

Creates a style, helps tell a the story and keep the audience interested and keep listening to the song.

Another Example is

This music video is Directed by Cole Bennett, He is a very advanced visual effect director who produces music videos. Also, 'Ski Mask The Slump God' uses alot of different effects in his music video, often random and weird effects but they all make him different to other artists.

Breakdown of the music video above.

In this picture the video starts with this shot, with the instrumental playing over the top. In this shot there are no effects, I think they started the video with no effects just to show the comparison between having effects and then having no effects, I like the way they start with none because it also shows of the location more, and being in NYC, for a music video is very influential, and it grabs the audience in more. So using no effects but New York City just also shows of the location as well.

Practise doing after effects

I decided I wanted to make a effect trying to make it look like a broken tv, or an old tv channel, using the colour bars and the gritty texture. I started using a black background and then writing Jesus, I wanted to use Jesus because I think it gives a simple yet really effective name, because of how famous or high it is. I used a flashing effect through each letter randomly.

I realised at this point the 'Jesus' doesn't look warped or looks like it would be on an old tv. So I then checked the effects and saw there is a preset for a warped tv, I tried this and it worked perfectly. Doing this adds more effect and therefore attracts the audience more and keeps them interested it also makes the shot look how I want it to look.

I started to create the colour bars, red is one of the main colours in the bars of distortion so I choose to add that in.

I started to play around with the settings and different ways to edit the effect. Until I achieved what I wanted the effect to look like.
